The American Bureau of Ships Q3 test in the 6G position is attempted by some of the students in EG-442 Advanced Welding.  This is a difficult test for the beginning welder, since it requires the weld to be made on pipe in a fixed (not rotated) position with the axis of the pipe 45 degrees off the vertical.  The test qualifies the welder to weld piping or tubing in any position.  Certification of the successful test is made by the instructor, not by the ABS or its inspectors.
